What is Habitat for Humanity?
Habitat for Humanity of the Magic Valley is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a worldwide organization dedicated to helping people in need obtain simple, decent, and affordable housing. It is not a handout, but a hand up. Families who qualify purchase their homes at cost with a zero interest mortgage.
How Habitat Works
Volunteers from many walks of life make gifts of money, material, and time to Habitat to build or remodel simple decent homes in partnership with people who do not qualify for conventional loans and who are in need of safe affordable housing. Volunteers and the families themselves provide most of the labor once an application for housing with Habitat has been approved and a family has been selected to partner on a home. Once the home is completed, the family makes monthly payments that cover insurance, taxes, and a payment towards the cost of building the home. The new homeowner is also responsible for utility, maintenance costs, and other usual homeowner expenses. Monthly mortgage payments made to Habitat go into a revolving fund that is used to build more homes with people in need.
