So Much More Than a House

No matter who we are or where we come from, we all deserve to have a decent life. We deserve to feel strength and stability day after day. We deserve to know we have the power to take care of ourselves and build our own futures.

At Habitat for Humanity, this is what unites us. Through shelter, we empower. Our shared vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Because every single one of us deserves the opportunity for a better future.

Giving Magic Families Hope

Habitat for Humanity of the Magic Valley is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes, by advocating for fair and just housing policies, and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions.

Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all.

Challenging Traditional Ideas

Habitat for Humanity is an often misunderstood organization. How is it funded? Who purchases the homes we build? How does it affect the community in which we all live? Click on some of the myths below to learn the truth about many common misconceptions about Habitat for Humanity.

    • Myth

Habitat for Humanity gives houses away to poor people.

    • Truth

Habitat for Humanity offers a homeownership opportunity to families living between 30 - 60% of the area median income, who are generally unable to obtain conventional house financing. In addition to purchasing their home and paying an affordable mortgage, partner homeowners contribute 300 - 500 hours of "sweat equity" on the construction of their home or another Habitat home. Our partner families are also required to take educational courses to help them succeed at owning a home.

    • Myth

Habitat houses allow people to move from poverty to fancy new houses.

    • Truth

Any newly built house is going to be a dramatic change for a family who has been living in a shack, hut or run-down apartment. But Habitat houses are not extravagant by any standard. Our philosophy is to build or renovate, simple, decent houses.

    • Myth

Poverty housing is such a large problem that it can never be solved.

    • Truth

Poverty housing is a huge issue. But Habitat believes that by continuing to build houses with people in need, by working with other committed groups, and by putting the issue of poverty housing on the hearts and minds of compassionate people everywhere, the problem can be solved.

All Are Welcome

Habitat for Humanity of the Magic Valley has an open-door policy. All who believe that everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people. Habitat welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and also serves people in need of decent housing regardless of race or religion. As a matter of policy, Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliated organizations do not proselytize. This means that Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must either adhere to or convert to a particular faith, or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.

Strength

A Habitat home is a strong foundation for a family, an opportunity on which they can build a better life. Strong and stable homes help build strong and stable communities.

Image

Stability

A Habitat home is a stabilizing force for a family. Better, affordable living conditions lead to improved health, stronger childhood development and the ability – and financial flexibility – to make forward- looking choices.

Self-Reliance

Through shelter, we empower. A decent place to live and an affordable mortgage help homeowners save more, invest in education, pursue opportunity and have more financial stability.
